Armored car doors vs. a fully armored vehicle: what’s actually covered?
“My car has armored doors” sounds reassuring. But does that mean the windows are protected? What about the roof, pillars, or the gaps between panels? The short answer: not necessarily. The coverage map matters more than the label.

The quick answer
A door retrofit addresses specified areas of the doors. A comprehensive armoring project may address glass, body panels, roof, floor, and material transitions as well. Neither name guarantees a particular coverage area or performance level: request a written scope for your exact vehicle.
What does an armored door retrofit cover?
Door retrofits add protective material behind selected door panels while aiming to retain the vehicle’s familiar appearance. Which doors are included, how much of each door is covered, and how installers handle hardware and edges depend on the vehicle and the package. A five-door project, for example, should explicitly state whether the rear hatch is included.
Crucially, adding material inside a door does not automatically upgrade its window. Standard side glass, the windshield, rear glass, pillars, roof, and floor remain outside the scope unless the quote specifically includes them. There can also be transitions and openings at the edges of protected areas. Think of a door-only package as a targeted retrofit, not a sealed protective shell.
What changes with full-vehicle armoring?
A broader build can include opaque body areas and specially designed transparent armor, with attention to the places where those materials meet. Depending on the specification, it may also address the roof, floor, firewall, rear cargo area, and other components. “Full” is not a universal checklist, though: two builds described that way can have different scopes.
More components can mean more weight, engineering work, cost, and changes to the way a vehicle operates. Glass, hinges, suspension, windows, braking, and payload all deserve review for the particular model. Ask for an itemized scope and a vehicle-specific assessment rather than assuming every full build has identical coverage.
A simple way to compare your options
| Area | Door retrofit | Broader armoring project |
|---|---|---|
| Selected door panels | Typically the focus | Can be included |
| Windows and windshield | Not automatically included | May be specified |
| Roof, floor, other body areas | Usually outside door scope | May be specified |
| Coverage at seams | Ask for details | Ask for details |
This is a comparison of typical scopes, not a promise about any specific CARARMO package or vehicle.
Five questions to ask before you request a quote
- Which exact doors and sections are included? Ask for a diagram, not only a package name.
- Are the windows, windshield, rear glass, and other glazed areas included or unchanged?
- How are pillars, seams, door edges, and transitions between materials handled?
- What test documentation applies to the actual material and installed assembly? What are its limitations?
- Will added weight affect hinges, windows, handling, payload, or service requirements for my model?
Also ask how the quoted price, installation plan, and any warranty terms apply to your vehicle. If a vendor cites a rating, distinguish a material test from a claim about the entire installed vehicle. No vehicle can be assumed to provide protection outside its documented design and test conditions.
Which approach is right for you?
If your priority is a discreet change to specific door areas, a targeted retrofit may be worth discussing. If your requirements include glass and other parts of the passenger compartment, ask about a broader specification. The choice starts with defining the areas you want assessed, your vehicle model, and the tradeoffs you can accept—not simply choosing the package with the strongest-sounding name.
